The Importance of Search Engine Marketing

If you haven’t gotten the hang of search engine marketing (SEM) yet, then let us give you a basic introduction to the concept. Search engine marketing is the latest method of business advertising, a method which is increasingly popular for a number of different reasons. You can use SEM to reach a vast global audience and spread your message while keeping your marketing and advertising costs relatively low. Combining the different aspects of SEM, you get a full marketing plan without a lot of expense.

Search engine marketing is similar to the other forms of advertising that you probably already use. Similar to advertisements placed on television or in newspapers, SEM is used to let potential customers know that you exist and that you have something to offer them which they should buy. You use SEM to reach a new audience and to remind your existing customers of why they want your product or service. Because SEM is done through the Internet instead of through these other traditional forms of media, your costs for advertising are much lower. At the same time, they can reach a broader audience.

Basically, the way that SEM works is that it increases your visibility on the Internet. One of the major ways that people find you through the Internet is via a search engine search. Just ask yourself how many times you’ve typed a keyword phrase into Google or another search engine to locate information or a desired product. Using SEM, you can increase your visibility on these search engines so that your website and products are the ones that come up when someone types in certain keywords. This is done in part by using these keywords throughout your site.

This type of keyword use throughout your website is called Search Engine Optimization (SEO). SEO is just one aspect of SEM. The short version of how this works is that you identify keywords that are related to your site or product. Try to think of what you would type in to a search engine to get the kind of information you offer. For example, if you have a dog grooming business, you may type in “grooming”, “dog”, or “pets”. You may also type in phrases such as “pet care” or “dog washing”. SEO takes all of these phrases and incorporates them into your site so that search engines know that’s what your site is about. Then when someone types these phrases into their search engine, the search engine knows to send them to you.

Another important aspect of SEM is paid advertisement placement. Basically, what you do is purchase a small ad that will show up during a search engine search. If you do a search for anything right now, you will see that there are advertisements lining the side of the page; these are paid placement ads. When people click on these ads, you earn revenue through a program called sponsored links or pay-per-click (PPC). You also drive traffic to your site which increases your revenue. Obviously, this costs a little bit of money but it’s still significantly less than marketing via traditional advertisement methods.

Using a combination of paid advertisements and SEO, you increase the visibility of your site on the web. The more people that can find you, the more people there are who might buy from you. Additionally, as more people see your name creep up on their searches, they’re likely to associate that name with trust. People tend to buy products based on name recognition even if they haven’t actually had experience with that product, so SEM services the purpose of getting your name out there and into the minds of potential customers.

Now is the time to get started with SEM if you haven’t already. Pricing for PPC ads and services that can assist you with SEO and PPC are still relatively low. This means that you can get a significant amount of marketing done without fronting a whole lot of money. As more and more people realize about the importance of SEM in today’s business market, these rates may go up. Getting in now and accessing your audience makes a lot more sense than waiting until later even if this whole SEM thing seems a little new to you.
